The electric gyroscope (or simply gyro) is a small electronic device that is used to stabilize the helicopter’s heading. It does this by detecting rotation of the helicopter and sending opposing commands to the helicopter’s anti-torque system.
The amount by which the gyro tries to oppose yawing is known as the gyro gain.
In laymen’s terms, the main tail rotor turning of the helicopter, tends to spin the heli around in the opposite direction of the blade. This force needs to be opposed, for the helicopter to stay facing the same direction. Gyro’s accomplish this task.
Newer 3 axis Gyros also attempt to stabilize the helicopter on the other 2 dimensions.
